SoundWaves – yet another reason to visit Nashville

Admittedly, I am not a water baby. Swimsuits strike fear in my heart. But, here I am in Nashville’s Gaylord Opryland Resort striding across one of the atriums in my cover-up headed for SoundWaves. Maybe my bravery comes from the fact other women of my age and physique are joining me or the fact its 26 degrees outside and the lazy river, appropriately called Down Tempo, is calling my name.

SoundWaves is an upscale water experience. It’s divided into age group areas with age appropriate water attractions including an adult only restaurant, Status Cymbal, bar and infinity pool on the third floor overlooking the rest of the water features.

These areas are separated by living walls of flowers and colorful plants. It’s a constant 84 degrees. A special roof even permits natural light in giving guests the opportunity to sunbathe indoors year-round.

Walking toward the lazy river, I watch as a young man helps a child on the Crowd Surfer FlowRider where two people can surf at once. As soon as the boy masters the surf board as he lies on his stomach, a big grin crosses his face and his parents cheer from the sidelines.

I’m no thrill seeker. There will be no surfing for me, but it’s fun to watch others dare the waves.

I grab a single inner tube, flop in and enter the stream. It is so relaxing to float down the river though rock formations, into caves and past waterfalls all created to resemble the Tennessee landscape.

There are several thrill attractions, but I am content to float along, chatting with my friend and letting the stress of the world float away. Later we will enjoy lobster rolls at Status Cymbal and chat before heading back to the lazy river and more relaxation in the sunshine of a winter day.
