Join Victoria Historical Society for a talk and screening on Thursday, October 24 ‘In Our Grandparents’ Kitchen, filmed and directed by Djuna Nagasaki at James Bay New Horizons, 234 Menzies Street, Victoria V8V 2G7. James Bay New Horizons opens at 7:15 pm for refreshments and conversation. Talk begins shortly after 7:30 pm.
In this presentation Djuna explores what it means to be Japanese Canadian and a descendant of the Japanese Internment and Dispossession. Her experience has been that though internment and dispossession led to disruption in family relations and loss of culture that the community still gathers around food. “Growing up, I always loved spending time at my grandpa’s house. When I was little, I knew that a visit to my grandpa’s house meant that we were going to get a sushi feast, and I would spend the whole car ride up the island eagerly daydreaming about Futomaki rolls and sweet Inari pockets…”.
Djuna Nagasaki is a Gosei (fifth Generation Japanese Canadian) born and raised in Victoria. An Anthropology student at the University of Victoria she is currently conducting research on Yonsei and Gosei identity (4th and 5th generation Japanese Canadian) and working on a Japanese Canadian Legacies project on Mayne Island. Djuna sits on the Japanese Canadian Young Leaders (JCYL) committee and is on the board of the Victoria Nikkei Cultural Society as an advocate for the younger voices within the Japanese Canadian community.
