Laura Thomson, Board member of Support Soweto Junior School (SSJS) intends to swim in the icy waters of Willows Beach for 20 minutes. She will attempt this feat to raise money for hot lunches at the school which is in Kibera, Kenya, Africa’s largest slum. The swim will take place on Saturday, March 30th at 10:00 am at Willows Beach.
“I’m willing to endure this discomfort to ensure that every child at Soweto Junior receives a nutritious meal,” says Laura. “Often it’s the only meal they will get that day.”
SSJS is asking people to pledge $1/minute. The $20 pledge is enough to feed one child for one month at the school. “But that’s not the only way people can help. You can get pledges yourself and dip or swim along with me,” says Laura. “Or just come out to cheer me on. I’ll need all the support I can get.” To donate, go to www.supportsowetojuniorschool.org
To make it an international event, the children at Soweto Junior will simultaneously be doing their own swims to raise funds.
Please come support us at Willows Beach on Saturday, March 30th at 10:00 am.
About Support Soweto Junior School (SSJS)
Support Soweto Junior School is a non-profit organization and a Registered Society in the province of BC. We are located in Victoria, British Columbia, Canada.
Our mission is to promote the children’s physical and emotional well-being by providing funds to ensure regular meals every school day. Learning is next to impossible when tummies are empty and, for many of the children, the school meal is their only food for the day.
