The 2021 Sooke Fine Arts Show Call to Artists is open now through midnight on May 25, with submissions arriving daily from artists across Vancouver Island and BC’s other coastal islands. As well, the Society has confirmed three diverse and exciting BC artists for this year’s jury.
This year will mark the 35th year of the Sooke Fine Arts Show (SFAS) and the second year that the show will be a virtual one. A dynamic new online gallery will welcome all viewers, from passionate art collectors to those new to and curious about the world of art. From July 23 to August 2, the virtual show, available on the Society’s website, will allow participants to move through a gallery, much like a physical art gallery, to view and purchase over 300 original art works from the comfort of their own home.
Submissions are open to artists on BC’s coastal islands creating original paintings, sculpture, photography, fibre arts, ceramics and hand-formed jewelry.
2021 Jury
This year’s show will be adjudicated by a jury panel of some of BC’s best and most experienced arts professionals, all well-known for their knowledge, creativity, and their contribution to the arts. Emily Hermant, Carey Newman (Ha̱yałka̱ng̱a̱me’), and John Stuart Pryce will review and choose over 300 art pieces for the show and determine the pieces for SFAS 2021 awards and special recognition.
For juror John Stuart Pryce the adjudication process involves paying attention to an artist’s capability in drawing, composition, and colour theory. Pryce further suggests that artists submit pieces which have captured the moment rather than what might be popular. Juror Emily Hermant, who is Associate Professor in the Audain Faculty of Art at Emily Carr University of Art Design says, “I’m looking forward to the “surprises” in submissions, and to seeing what kinds of practices artists are engaging in, especially given the current conditions we are all living through with this pandemic.”
The Sooke Fine Arts Show can be experienced through the website – www.sookefinearts.com – from July 23 to August 2. Tickets for Purchasers’ Preview Night on July 22 will be available for $25 starting May 31, also at www.sookefinearts.com.
