Fashion Forward – February 2016

Canada’s top designers weigh in on questions from mature women about how to dress, what to wear, what to avoid and how to look their very best.

Each month, we’ll tackle a new question to help you stay stylish and feel great!

Q: Patterns and textures: How can we use them for maximum effect?

Simon Chang: “Be careful in the bold mixing of patterns and matching of textures. Creative colour blocking should open the path. Keep it simple and don’t let the pattern wear you in or out. The look should have clarity and harmony.” simonchang.com

Jan Stimpson: “Patterns and textures are another way to stay on-trend and modernize a classic look. You know what works for your body shape and you already have favourites in your wardrobe for that reason. Now you can play with texture and patterns to match the seasonal trends. Patterns and prints change with the seasons, so try a printed scarf with your favourite outfit to instantly look chic and trendy. You’ll create surprising looks that you’ll love and that’s what is most important. A little print goes a long way.” symplithebest.com

Peter Nygard: “Be careful with patterns and textures. If they are too heavy, they will bulk you up. For patterns, stick to vertical lines versus horizontal. And when it comes to patterns and textures, keep them away from the hips and waist. They can make a look more fashionable, but be sure to use them to highlight the right places.” nygard.com
