Canada’s top designers weigh in on questions from mature women about how to dress, what to wear, what to avoid and how to look their very best.
Each month, we’ll tackle a new question to help you stay stylish and feel great!
Q: What design features produce a slimming look?
Simon Chang: “How a garment hangs on your body is the most important factor. Always buy the right size and it will definitely give you a slimmer look. Make sure the fabric has a soft feel and a bit of stretch built in. This will drape beautifully on your body. Jersey knit fabric is my first choice.” simonchang.com
Jan Stimpson: “The key to looking slim is to wear clothes that fit your body. Enhancing your body shape is the best way to look slim. Don’t wear clothes that are too big or too tight. Try to emphasize the parts of your body you love the most. Always ensure the garment fits on your shoulders – it’s the perfect start to a perfect fit. Dense knit fabrics with a luxurious drape are key for a successful, comfortable and forgiving fit. A low neckline shows off a beautiful décolletage and draws attention upwards. Tunics over a pair of leggings or narrow pants can show off a great pair of legs. Tops or tunics with angled hemlines offer a slimming effect and are a great addition to a wardrobe. It’s all about knowing your body and wearing what you feel makes you look great. No two women are the same, so keep playing with shapes until you find the one that is right for you.” symplithebest.com
Peter Nygard: “Avoid horizontal lines that cut you in half. Vertical lines lengthen your body. If you want to use horizontal lines, make sure they are around your shoulders – not your hips or waist. Anything that makes you look taller, like heels, and a well-fitted pant will make you look slimmer.” nygard.com
